Catharina Bossaert is a freelance consultant with over thirty-years’ experience in the fashion industry. Having worked in design, production, and brand development for some of Belgium’s best-loved labels, she is a seasoned creative professional who knows the business inside out. 
Her career trajectory includes Hilde&#38;amp;Co (baby and childrenswear), Maison Tricot (womanswear and interior objects), Aymara (knitwear), Van Hassels (womenswear), Fred &#38;amp; Ginger (childrenswear), Ginger (womenswear) and much more. 
Passionate about shapes, colours and materials, Catharina excels in translating concepts and ideas into beautifully crafted garments and knitwear. She is also a trained artist and designer with an active studio practice (find details of her work on the Project pages).
Catharina provides dedicated professional and multidisciplinary support to both large and small enterprises. Services include design work, production management, concept development and specialist advice.

︎The Won Wool Project / the sheep was worth a shave&#38;nbsp;
turning deadstock yarn into unique accessories
(ongoing project)
With a long career in fashion, Catharina is highly alert to the issues of waste and over-production. 
Today, she’s ‘winning back’ wool from the textile industry and transforming it into innovative and stylish accessories. 
The majority of materials are surplus to requirements: deadstock designer yarns and wool recuperated from shade cards and post-consumer garments. 
Other fibres are gathered from specialised commercial sources, such as factories and mills with high sustainability credentials. In 2020 the project started with a series of collars. Knitted on a Brother handloom knitting machine in Catharina’s Copenhagen studio, 
these eye-catching accessories are meticulously documented.

Now the won wool project continues with new designs, still knitted on her Brother handloom knitting machines (page︎ the sheep was worth a shave)&#38;nbsp;

	The collars share the same simple graphic form but, rather like samples or test pieces, they are all unique: the results of one-off experiments in colour, pattern and texture.&#38;nbsp;

Each piece comes with a biodegradable&#38;nbsp; identification tag (a nod to those worn by sheep) and a record card detailing the provenance of the wool. Currently in production: collars, scarves and hats.

DANSK LER
︎Playing with shapes (ongoing project)
Inspired by early twentieth-century Danish ceramics, this series of unique hand-built vessels explores the relationship between colour, texture and form. 
The pots, vases and boxes, plus corresponding lids and bases, all depart from simple geometric shapes. 
The pieces are conceived as individual but combinable elements that – just like building blocks – can be arranged into an infinite array of compositions.

Playfulness is a key theme: certain works can be turned upside down or modified through the addition of lids or plinths. 
The varying amounts of Chamotte in the clay, which adds a gritty texture to pottery and sculpture, creates surprising textures and finishes.Painterly effects and rich tonal contrasts are achieved through the layering of different slips, pigments and glazes. 
These variations – between light and dark, rough and smooth, luminosity and opaqueness – lend the works a raw, organic feel.

Wood Mood -&#38;nbsp;an ode to the beauty of trees

Long walks during the pandemic and a profound engagement with nature&#38;nbsp;
was the catalyst for this on-going series of ceramic tree trunks. 
Each work is both a vessel and a detailed study of texture and structure: 
the character of bark or the angle of branches, the patterns of twigs and signs of growth, such as knots and whorls. 
At the same time, they also evoke memories and ideas about the enduring beauty and power of trees: 
as sources of artistic and literary inspiration,as the lungs of the world and as symbols of life and growth in ancient mythologies.

	MY SUISEKI
︎
finding the beauty in everyday things
Take a handful of ordinary items or fragments of nature and place them on these hand-crafted ceramic plinths. 
Even the humblest objects – a button, a piece of ginger or a seed – can be transformed using this simple display technique. 
The project is inspired by the Japanese tradition of suiseki: small stones that are revered for their aesthetic value. 
Curate a personal selection of artefacts and use these pedestals to imbue them with fresh significance. Look at the world anew. Focus on the detail. Three plinths for three objects: just enough for an instant art installation or still life composition.
